Having grown up mostly in Rio Grande City, TX, Rudy Barrera graduated from Baylor University in Waco, TX in 1983 with a Bachelor%u2019s in Music Education. In the same year, he began teaching in RGC until 1995 when he accepted a position in Roma, TX. He stayed in Roma until 2008, and from 2008-2017 when he retired, Mr. B taught and led bands in RGC.In 2021, Mr. B returned to Roma to teach %u201cpart-time%u201d in his own words. I think we all know what that means.During 2000-2008, Mr. B was the Director of Bands at Roma High School where he created a culture of excellence to be passed down teacher to teacher and student to student for a long time to come! The Roma HS Mighty Gladiator Band reached new heights under his leadership including%u2014but certainly not limited to%u2014achieving the title of BOA South Texas Regional and San Antonio Super Regional Class Champions in 2005 and 2007, UIL 4A State Marching Band Championships 2001, UIL 4A State Marching Band Finalists in 2003, 2005, 2007 wherein Roma HS placed as high as 4th in the state, TMEA 4A State Honor Band Finalists 2002, 2004, and was the TMEA 4A State Honor Band runner-up in 2006. In 2006, Roma HS Band was the first band program in the state chosen by Texas Bandmasters Association for the Exemplary Band Program Award. Throughout his career, Mr. B lead bands with consistent UIL Concert and Sightreading Sweepstakes Awards, and helped countless students reach TMEA All State Band auditions each year, placing as many as 22 students in the state bands and orchestras in one year while at Roma HS.Mr. B has long been an incredible motivator to his students musically, knowing that his time as an educator was for the purpose of helping students be better people not just in music but in life. Music is the tool to communicate disciplines to be applied for the rest of our lives. His influence stretches as far as hundreds of band directors and professional musicians to this day due to his band directing career. With so much energy, quickness, and discipline, the people around him cannot help but to want to keep up! Currently, Mr. B lives in RGC, and has been married to Dora Nelly Barrera since 1987. They have 3 grown up children%u2014Lynette Cano, Ricardo B. Barrera, and Lizbeth Tapia%u2014and they all love to share their time together laughing and yelling and eating amazing food!Let it be known, this brief biography of Mr. B%u2019s effect on the band world was written by a family member after discovering Mr. B wanted his bio to say something along the lines of, %u201cI am simply a nobody who happened to be around to help students improve their lives.%u201dRGV HALL OF FAME INDUCTEERodolfo Barrera
